Eden Valley MotorBike Tour
The Most Romantic!
Come on, drag yourself away as we have much still to discover together.
Ride into Shap and turn right (south) and keep going until you see the signs for the M6, on your left, and on taking this road at the top of the rise turn right towards Orton. After a few miles, you will see the superb vista called the Howgill Fells and, just after the sign saying
‘Westmorland Dales’. An attempt by the Yorkshire Dales National Park to steal more of Cumbria. (just my opinion)
Keep following this road until you reach Orton T Junction, turn right and then a short distance turn left over a little bridge and we head off towards the bottom of a tropical ocean!.
Until 1952 Ravenstonedale had its own passenger railway station, and goods services were still available until the total closure of the line in January 1962. Although named Ravenstonedale, the station was on the western outskirts of Newbiggin, and the attractive building can still be easily seen from the A685 road. The station was on the Tebay to Kirkby Stephen East section of the Stainmore Railway from Tebay to Darlington, built to transport coke from the northeast to the iron industries of south Cumbria. We ride through this village and once the T Junction is reached, at the Fat lamb, turn left and within a mile, you will turn right following the signs for ‘Mallerstang’ and, are you ready to see the most romantic castle in Britain?.
